Kurt Kroon | Born 1960 | Based in Varberg, Sweden

My artistic expression moves within the dynamic interplay between monumental painting, three-dimensional sculpture, and contemporary forms of engagement through digital works. Rooted in classical modernism and further developed during my studies at Falkenberg Art School (1988–1990), my artistic practice has evolved into an exploration of form, surface, and the inherent voice of materials.

My professional career began in 1992, when my work was personally selected by Håkan Wettre for the Gothenburg December Salon (Göteborgs decembersalong). As an influential and highly respected curator in the city, Wettre was entrusted with the demanding task of serving as sole juror when Gothenburg Art Hall and Art Museum experimented with this format in the winter of 1992. The result was a considerably more rigorous, cohesive, and clearly defined artistic direction than in previous years. For me, this early recognition affirmed that my artistic expression had both substance and lasting potential.

Since then, my artistic practice has developed over decades of focused work. Among other milestones, this has led to participation in international group exhibitions in China (Ordos in 2015 and Xiamen in 2017), alongside established Scandinavian artists from Corner, the distinguished Danish artists' association, as well as a solo exhibition in spring 2026 at Gallery 53, presented through Kungsbacka Art Association.

Today, I work across three parallel yet interconnected disciplines, each informing and enriching the others:

Large-scale oil painting: Here, I work physically and intuitively. The large format allows me to explore the weight and layering of colour, with each canvas becoming a space for the viewer to enter.

Sculpture: The forms of two-dimensional painting are given physical presence and volume in space. My sculptures function as architectural anchors within my artistic universe.

Digital monoprints: By combining a contemporary digital interface with the absolute uniqueness of traditional monoprinting, I create original works of graphic art. Each print exists as a single physical impression, carrying a unique dialogue between technology and visual intuition.

After decades of maturation and development, during which much of my work has failed to pass the scrutiny of my own critical eye and has consequently been painted over or discarded, my artistic practice has now entered a phase of intense visual concentration.

By bringing together my artistic history with entirely new technical and spatial explorations, I strive to create art that is as intellectually challenging as it is immediate in its encounter with the viewer.
